Development in Brantford is happening extremely quickly. There are many great things the City Council and everyone involved have such as 40% natural/tree canopy for the city. However, more can be to help protect numerous natural areas that are being destroyed in order to continue development.
On this website you will find many posts/articles about the areas that are at risk due to development. The level of destruction for these areas varies and some are already in the process of being integrated into future and current development plans. The main goal of this is to raise awareness and in doing so show the City Council of Brantford and the development companies, that people care about what happens to these green-space areas.
What we hope to achieve are the following:
1) Preservation of areas mentioned in these posts
Proper incorporation of these green areas into the current and future development plans
It is evident that not every tree can realistically be saved. However, more detailed reports need to be created when needing to remove specific trees. Currently, butternut trees are protected and there are butternut trees in some of these areas but, if the entire small forest is where development will go they are cut anyways.
2) Better protection laws
A better law/protection for trees marked as green-space/core natural area. This is if trees are part of a trail, and connected to other trees they are not to be cut.
In this image below one area of many is shown, and it portrays how development has destroyed many trees in this area (other articles with more images are on this website, such as "Trail Trees Cut"). With better protection laws, these trees that are part of the trails, parks, green-space, etc. they will not be allowed to be cut.
In doing these 2 actions we would be saving many natural areas as protecting the animals that live in them, rather than continuing to destroy and reduce the size of these natural areas.
