Large Green Areas Near Shellard

There are 3 large areas near and along Shellard Lane that are at risk for development. These are the largest green-spaces in Ward 1, if development ends up destroying these core natural areas there will be a large negative impact on all the animals, vegetation, trails, parks.

Near the end of Shellard there are three large Core natural areas that are at risk for development. These areas are not only full of many trees and vegetation, but are also the homes of numerous animals. On top of that these are wet-land areas that flood during raining seasons meaning development of houses could have negative impacts not only for the environment but also for anything developed on these lands; flooding of basements and buildings.

This image here shows these three areas (we have already mentioned area 2 in the post "Shellard Lane Trees" so I wont talk about those now).

Area 1, which is the largest is home to numerous large animals like turkeys and deer. With the destruction of these area most of these animals will die. The goal is to have the majority removed from development plans and only have the farm field closest to the road used for development if it is even used at all.

Area 3 is mainly open farm fields which can be seen in the image below. However, it does an area that was planned to left as open space, as mentioned in another post.

Additionally right next to this area is a location with some fenced off trees that go along a creek. This location looks like it will be left as-is since they have developed some lakes near the area. However, there is still the risk that this area gets developed. The goal is to ensure this fenced off area remains protected as it is a nice part of the trail and surrounding forest that many animals use.

There are further areas of concern for development all along the southern edge of Brantford. Many of the trees in this field have already been cut, but those that remain can still be incorporated into plans. Additionally, the trees and fields that remain outside of Brantford should also remain as green-spaces as they too are part of an important area for the local wildlife, the beauty of trails and the vegetation that is already there.

Circled in orange are areas outside of Brantford. Circled in green are green spaces that we should look to protect.

There is much to be done to help the core natural areas and in helping/incorporating these areas into future development plans rather than destroying them the local wildlife, vegetation, parks, trails, etc will all benefit. Many of trees and areas could have been easily saved and incorporated into designs rather than being cut, hopefully a better solution can be created for the nature that remains.
