This is part of the LE Trail on south the edge of Brantford. Some time in late May of 2023 many trees directly beside the trail had been cut. Prior to this a large cluster of trees (small forest) was cut; this was covered in an earlier blog post on this website. The development/cutting of trees was something like this:
I do not currently have images of the trail at this section prior to all the trees being cut, however, it is visible from the satellite image that there were many trees here (probably over a hundred)
The reason for writing this is because the trees directly along a trail should NOT be cut. The trees in the red section on the image above used to be behind a black fence (Silt Fence) surrounding them, normally a black fence means that they are not to be cut as that is the edge of the construction area.
Here is an image showing what that.
This image was taken at the southern point of the area circled in red; just on the edge of Brantford's city limits.
Now the development that has continued will have houses closer to the trail than was intended before. This is negative for both the trail as now it has houses beside it opposed to nature. Additionally, it means the owner's of these properties now have a trail right beside their backyard opposed to a small 5-10 meter buffer with trees that give them more privacy. This isn't the the first time that something like this has happened but it should be the last. There are many other green space areas at risk of development that I have mentioned on this website. With more careful planning large amounts of trees can be incorporated into the development plans rather than cut.
I will also mention again that this was a "Core natural area", an area originally intended to be kept green. Just because land developers/contractors desire more land that doesn't mean it should be given from these important natural areas.
